Enemies Using App Data to Track U.S. Troops in Combat Zones

U.S. Central Command warned that hostile forces are targeting American troops through commercial location data harvested from mobile apps, according to Senator Ron Wyden.

The alert comes as U.S. forces face mounting threats from Iran’s radical Islamic regime in the Gulf region, as Breitbart News reports.

In correspondence shared with Reuters by U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, an Oregon Democrat, Central Command confirmed it had received multiple threat reports concerning adversary exploitation of commercial location data to surveil and potentially target American troops operating within its area of responsibility. The message, dated April 14, provided no additional details but highlighted vulnerability in a region where U.S. forces are directly confronting Iranian military forces over control of the Strait of Hormuz.

Commercial location data is routinely collected by digital advertisers through mobile apps and service providers, who then sell that information to data brokers. The scope of this surveillance is extensive, with one case documented by The New York Times in 2018 showing a woman’s location being recorded nearly every two seconds.

Bipartisan Warning on Operational Security

Senator Wyden joined bipartisan colleagues in a letter to Pentagon officials warning that commercial location data can reveal where U.S. troops congregate and establish patterns of life. These vulnerabilities can be exploited by adversaries to coordinate attacks using missiles, drones, and improvised explosive devices, as well as for counterintelligence operations.

The security concerns emerge as President Donald Trump pursues negotiations with Iran while simultaneously ordering military strikes against Iranian targets. Homeland Security Chairman Representative Andrew Garbarino recently emphasized the persistent cyber threat from Tehran, noting that Iran targets America millions of times daily through digital attacks.

The New York Republican warned that counter-drone operations, cyberattacks, and lone wolf actors represent the primary threats facing the nation. He stated that if Iranian operatives could successfully execute an attack on American soil, they would not hesitate to do so, expressing shock at those who defend the Iranian terrorist regime.

Trump Contrasts Approach with Obama Era

President Trump recently described his emerging framework with Iran as fundamentally different from former President Barack Obama’s nuclear agreement, which the current administration views as catastrophically flawed. Trump emphasized that any deal reached under his leadership would be sound and proper, unlike the Obama-era arrangement that provided Tehran with massive cash payments and what critics described as a clear pathway to nuclear weapons capability.

The location data vulnerability represents a modern warfare challenge as adversaries exploit commercial technology infrastructure to gain tactical advantages against American forces in conflict zones.
