DSCC Dumps $40M Into 10 States for Midterm Battle

The initiative, branded “Win the Senate” by the committee, will direct funding toward staffing, infrastructure development, training programs, and voter outreach operations across battleground states, according to Molly Parks writing in Washington Examiner. The DSCC is specifically targeting seven states where Democrats hope to flip Republican-held seats: Alaska, Florida, Iowa, Maine, North Carolina, Ohio, and Texas. Meanwhile, the committee is investing to defend Democratic incumbents in Georgia, Michigan, and New Hampshire.

DSCC Chairwoman Kirsten Gillibrand of New York and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, also of New York, expressed optimism that the substantial financial commitment positions their party favorably to capture Senate control. The announcement arrives roughly 100 days before voters head to the polls, as the primary season nears its conclusion and Democrats finalize their candidate roster for November.

In a joint statement, Gillibrand and Schumer declared that Democrats have broadened the electoral battlefield and established multiple routes to securing a Senate majority, crediting strong candidate recruitment, competitive campaigns, vulnerable Republican opponents, and a message centered on working families.

In states that have already completed their primaries, Senate Democrats are rallying behind state Representative Josh Turek in Iowa, former state Senator Troy Jackson in Maine, former Governor Roy Cooper in North Carolina, former Senator Sherrod Brown in Ohio, state Representative James Talarico in Texas, and Senator Jon Ossoff seeking reelection in Georgia.

Jackson and Brown are challenging sitting Republican Senators Susan Collins of Maine and Jon Husted of Ohio respectively. Turek, Cooper, and Talarico face competitive open-seat contests against Representative Ashley Hinson of Iowa, former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley, and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton respectively. Ossoff is defending his seat against GOP challenger Representative Mike Collins of Georgia.

Four states—Alaska, Florida, New Hampshire, and Michigan—have yet to hold their primary elections. The DSCC is backing former Representative Mary Peltola to challenge Senator Dan Sullivan in Alaska and Representative Chris Pappas of New Hampshire to fill the seat being vacated by retiring Senator Jeanne Shaheen.

In Michigan, Representative Haley Stevens, Schumer’s favored candidate, is engaged in an intense primary battle scheduled for August 4 against progressive challenger Abdul el Sayed, though the DSCC has withheld an endorsement in that race. The committee has similarly declined to back a candidate in Florida, where state Representative Angela Nixon is competing against veteran Alex Vindman.

The DSCC promoted its endorsed candidates on social media Monday, featuring Ossoff, Cooper, Brown, and Peltola prominently, followed by Turek, Talarico, and Pappas. Jackson, recently selected by Maine Democrats to replace Graham Platner who withdrew amid sexual assault allegations, appeared on a final slide alongside district attorney Scott Colom, the Democratic nominee in Mississippi—a state notably excluded from the $40 million investment.

According to Cook Political Report ratings, Alaska, Maine, Michigan, and Ohio are classified as toss-ups among the 10 targeted states. Iowa and Texas lean Republican, while Georgia, North Carolina, and New Hampshire lean Democratic. Florida represents an ambitious reach for Democrats, as Cook Political Report ranks it solidly Republican. Senator Ashley Moody is seeking reelection after being appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis.
