DHS Issues $84B in Fines to Illegal Immigrants Under Trump
The Department of Homeland Security has levied over 100,000 civil fines totaling $84 billion against illegal immigrants since Trump returned to office, collecting $1.2 billion in payments.
As reported by Fox News Digital, the Department of Homeland Security issued 103,000 civil fines since Trump re-entered the White House roughly 18 months ago. By July, the agency had successfully collected about $1.2 billion in fine payments from illegal immigrants subject to removal orders.
The administration instituted a daily fine of $998 for illegal immigrants who have received final removal orders but fail to voluntarily depart the United States or comply with deportation directives. The fines must be paid before deportation occurs, and DHS has indicated it may seize assets from those who refuse payment.
President Trump’s administration has rolled out multiple initiatives aimed at incentivizing illegal immigrants to leave American territory. The Department of Homeland Security emphasized that non-compliant individuals face significant financial penalties if they refuse to self-deport.
Cost-Effective Alternative to Traditional Deportation
Department officials maintain the fine program costs considerably less than conventional deportation proceedings while encouraging voluntary departure. U.S. Customs and Border Protection distributed informational materials outlining both benefits and consequences for illegal immigrants who choose self-deportation through the CBP Home application.
According to DHS guidance, non-criminal illegal immigrants who voluntarily return to their home countries may retain earnings accumulated while in the United States and preserve eligibility to pursue legal immigration channels in the future. Some individuals may also qualify for subsidized flights if they cannot afford travel expenses.
The agency’s materials warn that those who decline self-deportation will be apprehended by DHS enforcement without advance notice or opportunity to arrange personal affairs.
Mass Exodus Under Trump’s Immigration Crackdown
More than 3 million illegal immigrants departed the United States during Trump’s first year back in office, based on Department of Homeland Security figures released in May. The department estimated that approximately 2.2 million of those individuals self-deported voluntarily.
By mid-May, the administration had formally deported nearly 900,000 illegal immigrants and arrested more than 900,000 others. Department officials characterized these numbers as evidence that Trump’s enforcement policies have fundamentally altered migration patterns following record illegal crossings during the previous Biden administration.
