Democratic socialists emboldened by election wins nationwide

Conservative columnist Guy Benson warned that progressive victories in New York's primary elections would show the Democratic Party remains controlled by its radical far-left base.

Guy Benson, senior columnist at Washington Examiner, made the assessment as multiple progressive candidates competed in various New York races, with three receiving endorsements from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who openly identifies as a democratic socialist.

Speaking on Fox News’s America Reports Tuesday, Benson warned that progressive wins would signal the Democratic Party remains under the control of hardcore leftist activists in key regions, with the trend continuing to spread nationwide.

The columnist noted how dramatically the party’s ideological center has shifted in recent years. What was once considered the Democratic establishment would have been viewed as far left by traditional American standards not long ago, Benson observed. Now those same figures appear as relative moderates compared to the new wave of Democratic Socialists of America-backed insurgents who feel increasingly empowered.

Far-Left Slate Backed by Socialist Mayor

Mamdani threw his support behind candidates who share his far-left ideology, including former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander running in New York’s 10th Congressional District. The mayor also endorsed self-described democratic socialists Darializa Avila Chevalier in the 10th Congressional District and assembly member Claire Valdez in the 7th Congressional District.

During the NBA Finals featuring the New York Knicks, Mamdani released a basketball-themed advertisement promoting his chosen “team” for the upcoming election.

Warning of Nationwide Expansion

Benson cautioned that successful outcomes for these candidates would embolden progressive activists across America to pursue similar electoral strategies. Key victories in New York would send a message to the hardcore base that if such candidates can succeed there, they can replicate that success anywhere in the country.

The veteran journalist added that mainstream and establishment Democrats appear terrified of this wing of their party and remain uncertain how to respond to the growing influence of democratic socialists within Democratic ranks.
