Dem Whip Avoids Question on Cutting Spending to Lower Rates
House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark called for ending an ongoing conflict and reopening the Strait of Hormuz to reduce gas prices and ease the affordability crisis facing American households.
Speaking on CNBC’s “Squawk Box” on Friday, Clark addressed concerns about affordability as families struggle with elevated gas prices and rising interest rates. When co-host Becky Quick pressed the Massachusetts representative on how Democrats plan to tackle these twin pressures—noting that lower interest rates would typically require government spending restraint—Clark pivoted to foreign policy as a solution.
“The fastest thing we can do to lower costs for Americans right now is end this war and get to a resolution of it, open the Strait of Hormuz, and bring those gas prices down,” she stated.
Clark then illustrated the broader affordability crisis through a personal account. She recounted meeting a Phoenix mother earning $100,000 annually who nonetheless faces severe financial hardship. Despite her substantial income, the family’s situation deteriorated when her husband lost employment. Today, he sells plasma to help cover expenses including childcare, mortgage payments, and student loan obligations—a sign, Clark suggested, of widespread economic desperation across the country.
The congresswoman referenced a failed effort to advance a war powers resolution, attributing its withdrawal to Republican concerns about voter backlash over energy prices and military spending. She characterized the administration’s response to these domestic struggles as dismissive, suggesting policymakers have lost focus on ordinary citizens’ immediate needs.
