Dem Rep. Grijalva: Catholics ‘Not Christian Enough’ for Trump
Democratic Rep. Adelita Grijalva accused the Trump administration of promoting Christian nationalism that excludes Catholics and Muslims from its vision of American identity.
Representative Adelita Grijalva of Arizona made the provocative claim during an appearance on MSNBC’s “The Beat” on Friday, as Breitbart News reports.
During the segment, guest host Luke Russert pressed Grijalva on what he characterized as troubling findings regarding the Trump administration’s America 250 initiative, now branded as Freedom 250. Russert suggested the commemoration contains what he called a strong element of Christian nationalism designed to define American identity.
In her response, Grijalva argued that such an approach represents a fundamental departure from America’s founding principles. She claimed the nation was built on contributions from immigrants of diverse nationalities and religious backgrounds, emphasizing that the United States has no official state religion.
The Arizona Democrat then made her most striking assertion, alleging that the current administration has created a hierarchy of acceptable faith. According to Grijalva, the administration operates on the basis of how Christian you are, going so far as to suggest that Catholics are deemed not Christian enough under this framework, while Muslims are excluded entirely from the national vision.
Grijalva characterized the administration’s approach as creating an exclusive club of elitists that deliberately pushes Americans away from what should be a unifying national celebration. She contrasted this with her vision of America as a melting pot where diversity strengthens the nation rather than divides it.
The comments reflect ongoing tensions between progressives and conservatives over the role of religious heritage in American civic life and national celebrations.
