Dem Rep. Ansari Calls Iran Deal ‘Abysmal’ But Says Cut Losses
Representative Yassamin Ansari criticized Trump's Iran policy as "abysmal," saying the war failed all objectives and the emerging nuclear deal lacks human rights provisions.
A Democratic congresswoman has delivered a scathing assessment of both the Trump administration’s Iran policy and the emerging nuclear deal, calling the situation “abysmal” while acknowledging the urgent need to end American military engagement in the region.
Representative Yassamin Ansari of Arizona appeared on CNN’s “The Lead” Tuesday to discuss the Iran negotiations, offering sharp criticism of the conflict’s origins and its failure to achieve stated objectives, according to Breitbart News.
The Arizona Democrat argued that the war should never have been initiated in the first place, pointing to what she characterized as constantly shifting objectives under President Trump’s leadership. Whether the goal was dismantling Iran’s nuclear program, achieving regime change, or eliminating the missile program, Ansari contended that none of these aims had been accomplished.
The congresswoman noted that the conflict has instead produced a more adversarial outcome, with Iran now governed by what she described as a more combative and hardline younger regime. The nuclear program remains intact, and based on leaked information about the emerging agreement, the deal appears to be merely a framework for future negotiations rather than a concrete settlement.
Ansari highlighted a critical gap in the proposed agreement: the complete absence of human rights provisions for Iranian citizens. She referenced the January massacres of thousands of Iranians and recalled President Trump’s repeated promises that help was coming, which led many to believe intervention was imminent.
The deal fails to address the release of political prisoners, including American citizens currently held in Iran’s most notorious detention facilities, she said. Political executions continue unabated, and the agreement contains no mechanisms to prevent continued funding of terrorist organizations.
Despite her harsh evaluation of the deal itself, Ansari acknowledged the practical reality facing the United States. This war needs to end. We need to cut our losses, she stated, describing the conflict as catastrophic from its inception and deeply damaging to America’s standing internationally.
