China’s Preference for Biden Over Trump Revealed
Chinese Communist Party leaders actively sought to undermine President Trump's 2020 re-election in favor of Joe Biden, according to recently disclosed intelligence findings reported by the Washington Examiner.
A newly published intelligence assessment reveals that throughout Trump’s first presidential term, the Chinese Communist Party pursued a deliberate strategy to exploit both domestic and international opposition to the sitting president. The goal was straightforward: reduce Trump’s electoral support and either force his resignation or prevent his return to office.
During the 2020 election cycle, Beijing weighed various interference and influence operations designed to assist Biden’s candidacy, though ultimately determined such overt actions carried too much risk. Nevertheless, the assessment from the National Intelligence Council confirms that China did implement measures aimed at weakening Trump’s re-election prospects.
Intelligence analysts speculated on Beijing’s motivations, suggesting Chinese leadership believed a Biden administration would prove more predictable and immediately work to reduce bilateral tensions. The Communist regime also anticipated Biden might roll back the aggressive tariff policies implemented under Trump.
But China’s preference for Biden went far deeper than intelligence speculation. Biden’s decades-long political record provided the Chinese Communist Party with substantial evidence that Democratic leadership would serve their interests.
A Senator Who Championed China’s Rise
As a senator, Biden championed policies that significantly benefited China, built on naive assumptions about the Communist regime’s willingness to liberalize. He served as ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 2000 when Congress voted to grant Permanent Normal Trade Relations to China, effectively dismantling U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods and clearing the path for China’s World Trade Organization entry.
Biden argued forcefully for the policy, expressing his belief that integrating China into the international system would ultimately compel Beijing to improve its behavior. This assessment proved catastrophically wrong. Rather than fostering democratic reform, opening Western markets to China enriched the Communist government and provided Beijing with increased leverage to resist pressure on human rights, religious freedom, speech, and democratic governance.
Vice Presidential Friendship With Xi
Biden never acknowledged his error on China trade, and his conduct as vice president only reinforced Beijing’s confidence that he would maintain favorable arrangements. His 2011 trip to China, where he met with then-Vice President Xi Jinping, included a particularly disturbing moment when Biden publicly endorsed China’s One Child Policy without prompting.
Biden told Chinese officials he fully understood and would not second-guess their one-child-per-family policy, effectively putting the United States on record as accepting a program enforced through forced abortions and sterilizations. The policy’s brutal implementation and fundamental violation of family autonomy made Biden’s statement especially shameful.
During that visit, Biden and Xi spent at least ten hours together and played basketball. The two leaders met again in 2012, and by 2013, when Xi had assumed the presidency, he referred to Biden as his old friend.
Dismissing the Chinese Threat
Biden continued minimizing China’s threat to American interests throughout the years that followed. Speaking at Harvard in 2014, he insisted China’s success served American interests and downplayed Beijing as a strategic competitor, instead emphasizing China’s domestic challenges with energy and water resources. He even suggested the United States should assist China in solving these multi-trillion-dollar problems.
During his 2019 presidential campaign, Biden mocked opponents who took a confrontational stance toward China, demonstrating his continued reluctance to recognize the Communist regime as a serious competitor to American interests.
The pattern was unmistakable: Biden’s Senate career advanced China-friendly policies based on flawed assumptions, his vice presidency featured warm personal relations with Xi while excusing human rights abuses, and as a 2020 candidate he denied China posed a competitive threat. Meanwhile, his son Hunter Biden received millions from Chinese sources while the future president raised no objections.
China’s Communist leadership had every reason to believe Biden and the Democrats would serve their strategic objectives far better than Trump’s combative America First approach. The intelligence assessment simply confirmed what Biden’s own record had already made abundantly clear.
