Catholic Nuncio Visits Lebanese Christians Defying Israeli Orders

Archbishop Paolo Borgia toured several communities on Monday, continuing a pattern of solidarity visits he has maintained throughout the conflict, according to Breitbart News. The nuncio has made clear his mission extends beyond majority-Christian areas to all Lebanese communities affected by the violence.

Hezbollah initiated the current hostilities by launching attacks on Israel from Lebanese territory in March. Since then, the consequences have rippled across the region, affecting villages of all religious compositions.

Church Solidarity With Suffering Communities

During a March visit to the conflict zone, the archbishop noted that war impacts Christian, mixed, and Muslim villages alike, forcing many residents to flee their homes. He has emphasized that displaced Shiites face particularly difficult circumstances, though Christians have also been forced to relocate to Beirut and northern areas.

The economic toll compounds the humanitarian crisis, as entire villages in the south stand abandoned and economic activity grinds to a halt. Archbishop Borgia stressed the importance of showing the presence of both the universal and Lebanese Church to communities bearing this burden, representing the Holy Father and people of goodwill supporting those enduring tragedy.

Humanitarian Aid Delivery Amid Isolation

The nuncio brought critical humanitarian supplies on his latest visit, provided by relief organizations including Caritas-Lebanon. Father Samir Ghaoui, president of Caritas-Lebanon, accompanied the archbishop on the mission.

Local leaders reported that these deliveries represent a lifeline, as the conflict has severed connections between southern villages and the rest of Lebanon. Farmers expressed anxiety about security conditions preventing field work during the approaching harvest season, which could devastate income for already impoverished communities.

Israeli Operations Continue Despite Civilian Presence

The Israeli military continues issuing evacuation orders across Lebanon, which some villagers refuse to obey. Reports indicate both civilians and Lebanese army members have been struck in Israeli operations targeting Hezbollah positions.

On Tuesday, Israeli forces released photographs of a substantial Hezbollah weapons cache discovered in a supposedly civilian residence in Zawtar Sharqieh village, north of the Litani River dividing northern and southern Lebanon. The stockpile included Kalashnikov rifles, missiles, anti-tank rocket launchers, magazines, grenades, communication devices, drones, and other military equipment.

Israeli statements cited this discovery as further evidence that Hezbollah deliberately embeds its operations within civilian infrastructure. The Israel Defense Forces reported finding several additional weapons depots in civilian structures throughout Zawtar Sharqieh and neighboring towns in recent days.

Security Incidents Expose Ongoing Threats

Monday night saw a suspected Hezbollah operative infiltrate northern Israel from Lebanon and open fire on Israeli troops, who killed him in return fire. Local community leader David Azoulay called the incident proof that security remains elusive even after nearly three years of northern conflict and despite Israeli efforts to establish a security zone.

Azoulay demanded Israel impose costs on Hezbollah for its territorial penetration attempts and ensure such events do not pass without consequence.

Tyre Faces Complete Evacuation Warning

Israel launched airstrikes on the major Lebanese city of Tyre on Tuesday and issued an unprecedented warning for the entire city to evacuate, including the Christian quarter of the Old City previously exempted from such orders. The IDF indicated last week that intelligence suggests Hezbollah fighters operate from the Christian quarter, believing it safe from attack.

The Lebanese health ministry reported that strikes conducted before the evacuation warning killed at least eight people and wounded 32 others.

Georges Iskandar, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Tyre for the Melkite Greek Catholic Church, announced Tuesday his church would not abandon its community duties and residents would not comply with evacuation orders. He declared they would not leave a city blessed by the footsteps of Jesus Christ and which has witnessed to faith and resilience throughout history.

Lebanese President Appeals For Ceasefire

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun made a direct appeal to Israel on Monday to negotiate a ceasefire arrangement with his government, as Breitbart News reports, arguing that military solutions will never provide security for northern Israeli residents.

During a CNN interview, Aoun expressed Lebanese readiness and commitment to dialogue, challenging Israel to respond in kind. He clarified he seeks an immediate cessation of hostilities rather than a comprehensive peace deal, acknowledging that establishing durable peace requires time.
