According to Nius, the incident unfolded shortly after midnight when federal police attempted to conduct a routine entry check on a Renault Clio entering Germany. Officers signaled the vehicle to stop and directed the driver to pull into the control station. The driver refused to comply.

Instead of stopping, the man accelerated directly toward the uniformed officers, forcing them to jump out of the way to avoid being struck, police reports confirm.

After breaking through the checkpoint, the driver turned around and headed back toward France along Strasburger Strasse. Two federal police officers again attempted to stop the vehicle. Once more, the Renault driver accelerated and drove straight at the officers.

Facing an immediate threat to their lives, both officers drew their service weapons and fired shots at the approaching vehicle while simultaneously diving aside to avoid collision.

A third federal police officer positioned himself in the fleeing driver’s path before the French border. That attempt also failed when the officer was forced to leap aside to avoid injury.

Pursuing officers soon located the abandoned Renault on French territory. Two men had apparently been in the vehicle. Both fled on foot. The suspected driver, a 21-year-old man, was apprehended and provisionally arrested. He sustained minor injuries but was not hit by the gunfire, police confirmed.

The second occupant remains at large. Authorities believe he may be a 20-year-old man whose identity document was found inside the vehicle. Police stated they cannot currently confirm whether the passenger is actually this individual or whether he may have been injured during the incident.

The case highlights ongoing challenges with border security and the dangers federal police face during routine enforcement operations at Germany’s western frontier.
