California Teacher Who Wed Gaza Man for Citizenship Faces Prosecution
A California teacher who admitted marrying a Gaza man to share citizenship privileges faces potential prosecution from federal immigration authorities after her arrangement was publicly exposed.
Federal officials have signaled that criminal prosecution may follow after Laura Pinho, a California dance instructor and CODEPINK activist, revealed during a webinar that she married a man in Gaza to equalize the playing field through her American passport, according to David Spector writing in New York Post.
Zach Kahler, spokesman for US Citizenship and Immigration Services, delivered a clear message this week following the disclosure of the controversial marriage. The agency expects to discover and prosecute those engaged in such illegal activity, he stated.
The revelations emerged from a June 16 webinar titled “Challenging Zionism In Our Schools,” where Pinho, 51, openly discussed her marriage strategy. She justified her actions by referencing the power inherent in her American passport, obtained at birth, and claimed a moral obligation to redistribute that advantage.
Marriage records from Utah County confirm that Pinho wed Salem S.E. Abu Amra on April 5. Utah state law permits virtual marriage ceremonies provided both parties present valid identification and secure a marriage license beforehand.
Just weeks before the wedding, Pinho organized a crowdfunding campaign for Abu Amra, describing him as the primary caregiver for a family of five. The campaign portrayed him as spending his days searching for clean water and food to keep his family alive.
Extremist Content and Terrorism Glorification
Abu Amra’s social media history reveals apparent celebration of terrorist violence. His posts include a 2018 image of a rifle adorned with a rose alongside Palestinian text, and a 2019 tribute to Baha Abu al Atta, a Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist eliminated in an Israeli airstrike.
Additional posts from 2019 featured a text mosaic depicting interlocking rifles formed from the word “Palestine” written in multiple languages.
Pinho herself shared extremist content, including a December 2024 Facebook post claiming Israel was established by Satanic bankers.
Denial and Legal Consequences
When confronted by reporters, Pinho denied marrying Abu Amra for immigration purposes, claiming she is wildly in love with him. She explained her failure to mention this romance during the webinar by saying her previous partner, improv coach Derek J. Reid, was present in her home at the time.
Marriage fraud for immigration benefits constitutes a serious federal crime carrying penalties of up to five years imprisonment and fines reaching $250,000. USCIS operates under Department of Homeland Security oversight and has expanded its investigative resources to combat such schemes, according to Department of Justice guidelines.
Kahler emphasized that his agency continuously enhances investigative capabilities and will aggressively pursue individuals engaged in marriage fraud to obtain immigration benefits.
