Violence escalated outside a Newark immigration detention center as demonstrators clashed with law enforcement officers on the fifth consecutive day of protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations, according to New York Post.

The confrontations at Delaney Hall reached a new level Tuesday when protesters physically struggled with officers over plastic barriers meant to prevent a large white truck from departing the facility. Video footage captured the chaotic scenes as demonstrators attempted to obstruct law enforcement operations at the 1,000-bed detention center.

The Department of Homeland Security issued a sharp rebuke of the protesters’ actions, declaring in a statement that the demonstrators had committed felonies by obstructing law enforcement operations. The agency accused local police of refusing to assist federal authorities during the disturbances.

New York Post reports that after detention facility employees cleared the barriers, one protester stood directly in front of the departing truck in what appeared to be a staged photo opportunity before being removed by facility staff.

Political Leadership Fuels Demonstrations

The protests began over the holiday weekend, with demonstrators wearing keffiyeh scarves and displaying Antifa flags gathering outside the center. The activists claimed detainees inside were conducting hunger and labor strikes to protest conditions at the facility.

However, DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin flatly rejected these allegations, stating there is no hunger strike occurring at Delaney Hall and dismissing claims of substandard conditions as politically motivated fabrications by sanctuary state politicians seeking fundraising opportunities.

Mullin directed particular criticism at New Jersey elected officials who spent Memorial Day weekend attacking ICE operations rather than honoring the nation’s fallen service members. He emphasized that ICE agents were removing murderers, pedophiles, rapists and drug traffickers from New Jersey communities.

Governor Denied Entry After Political Stunt

New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill appeared at the facility Monday in what DHS characterized as a political stunt, New York Post reveals. Sherrill was denied entry to Delaney Hall despite several Democratic officials including Senator Andy Kim, Representative Rob Menendez and Representative Nellie Pou having toured the facility during the weekend.

DHS condemned sanctuary state politicians for what it called embarrassing behavior during a weekend meant to honor military veterans and fallen heroes.

Facility Conditions Defended

The Department of Homeland Security issued detailed statements refuting claims about detention center conditions. Officials confirmed all detainees receive three daily meals, clean water, clothing, bedding, showers, soap and toiletries. Detainees also have access to family and legal communications.

Additionally, the department stated that comprehensive healthcare including medical, dental and mental health services are provided, along with access to medical appointments and 24-hour emergency care. DHS noted that many illegal immigrants receive better healthcare in federal custody than they had access to previously.

Confrontational Tactics Intensify

While protester numbers appeared to decline Tuesday morning, their tactics grew more aggressive and disruptive. Video evidence showed armed ICE agents in protective gear confronting demonstrators, including one woman who screamed into a bullhorn directly at an agent’s face.

The protests initially erupted following a Friday evening vigil organized by families of detained individuals. The demonstrations have continued throughout the week despite law enforcement efforts to maintain order and facility operations.

Federal authorities have vowed that violent protesters will not impede ICE operations and that law and order will be restored at the Newark detention facility.
