Dem Rep. Smith: Socialist Candidates a ‘Fundamental Attack on America’

Representative Adam Smith of Washington, appearing on CNN News Central on Tuesday, drew a sharp distinction between legitimate Democratic policy goals and what he characterized as the extreme positions embraced by certain Democratic Socialist candidates, according to Breitbart News.

When questioned about Democratic Socialist U.S. House nominee Darializa Avila Chevalier, Smith acknowledged that many Democrats want stronger opposition to former President Trump, more aggressive action on income inequality, and new leadership. He stated there is broad support across the Democratic coalition for economic populism and addressing wealth concentration.

However, Smith then issued a blunt assessment of where some Democratic Socialists diverge from mainstream Democratic positions. He warned that the ideology of some of these candidates runs vastly more radical than standard Democratic platform issues.

The congressman specifically called out support for Communism, open borders policies, defunding the police, and what he termed a fundamental attack on America itself and the premises behind it as core problems with the Democratic Socialist movement.

Dangerous Policy Agenda

When CNN co-host John Berman pressed Smith to clarify what he meant by describing these positions as dangerous, the Washington Democrat doubled down on his criticism.

Smith argued that eliminating immigration enforcement creates serious problems for the country. He warned that defunding police and undermining the criminal justice system reduces public security. The congressman also cautioned that removing personal responsibility and accountability from the equation while promising free programs to everyone creates unsustainable funding challenges.

The longtime Democratic lawmaker framed the American system around the principle of working hard, playing by the rules, and getting ahead. While acknowledging the need for greater opportunity, Smith characterized the agenda of some Democratic Socialist candidates as pretty radical and poor policy.

Electoral Concerns

Beyond policy disagreements, Smith expressed concern that the radical positions of Democratic Socialist candidates could create electoral difficulties for the broader Democratic coalition. His comments reflect growing tensions within the party between establishment figures and the progressive wing that has gained prominence in recent election cycles.

The congressman’s unusually direct public criticism of fellow Democrats on the left signals deepening fractures within the party as it navigates questions about its future direction and ideological boundaries heading into upcoming election cycles.
