The Democratic governor made his remarks Thursday during an interview with Jacob Soboroff on MSNBC’s “The Moment,” according to Breitbart News, after attending a ceremony for the Obama Presidential Center.

Gavin Newsom was pressed by Soboroff about his forceful condemnation of the DOJ probe targeting both him and his wife. The governor responded by contrasting the Obama ceremony with what he characterized as the current state of American leadership.

Describing his emotional reaction at the Obama event, Newsom recounted how attendees told him they cried throughout the proceedings. He explained that he began tearing up himself once on stage, attributing the emotional response to a missing spirit and pride in the nation.

The California governor directly blamed the Trump administration for this void, stating that Americans have been missing this feeling because of what he called “that business” and because of people who are unworthy of their positions. He contrasted this with what he witnessed at the Obama ceremony, describing those on stage as individuals worthy of what the Founding Fathers lived and died for.

Newsom concluded his remarks with a veiled reference to authoritarian regimes, noting that this is stuff that happens in other countries. He declined to elaborate further, simply stating that such conduct occurs in other nations.

The DOJ investigation into Newsom and his wife represents the latest escalation in tensions between Democratic state leaders and the Trump administration, which has pursued multiple probes into political opponents since returning to office.
