Signed, Sealed, Now to Deliver: U.S.-Iran Talks Begin
Switzerland confirmed initial negotiations on a U.S.-Iran memorandum to end the Middle East war will begin Friday at a Swiss resort with Vice President JD Vance participating.
Iranian chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and U.S. Vice President JD Vance are expected to participate in working through the details of the agreement at the Burgenstock luxury hotel complex near Lucerne in central Switzerland.
The Swiss foreign ministry released a statement confirming the timeline for the talks. The plan calls for the United States and Iran, alongside mediators Pakistan and Qatar and other involved nations, to convene at the Burgenstock location for initial negotiations on implementing the agreement.
The announcement dispels earlier uncertainty surrounding whether the meeting would proceed as scheduled. The diplomatic talks were originally planned as a signing ceremony for the memorandum of understanding between Washington and Tehran to end the regional conflict that began in February.
However, the signing was unexpectedly moved forward. President Donald Trump signed the document Wednesday during a candlelit dinner outside Paris. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was not present and signed remotely, as Breitbart News reported.
The memorandum establishes a broad framework to end the conflict through a comprehensive deal within 60 days, according to Breitbart News.
Under the terms of the agreement, the United States and Iran would immediately cease military operations, commit to refraining from future attacks against one another, and respect each other’s sovereignty and borders.
The deal further stipulates winding down the U.S. naval blockade, reopening the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz to regular commercial shipping, and establishing a watchdog group to ensure both parties adhere to the terms.
