Illegal Aliens Used Drones to Smuggle Drugs into Louisiana Prison
Two illegal aliens, including a suspected MS-13 gang member, were arrested in Louisiana for allegedly using drones to surveil a federal prison to smuggle drugs and phones to inmates.
Among those apprehended is Gustavo Mendoza Alvarez, a 25-year-old Mexican national suspected of belonging to the violent MS-13 gang. Alvarez faces multiple serious charges including taking contraband to a penal institution, resisting an officer, simple escape, criminal conspiracy, principal to aggravated flight from an officer, principal to reckless operation of a vehicle, and principal to aggravated criminal property damage.
The second illegal alien involved in the scheme will face charges once he completes medical treatment at a local hospital.
Drone Surveillance and Violent Confrontation
The Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that the two foreign nationals deployed a drone to monitor the federal prison facility in Grant Parish. When law enforcement officers moved to intercept them, the suspects attempted to flee the scene by vehicle.
During the pursuit, the illegal aliens executed a U-turn and drove their vehicle head-on directly into the deputies’ patrol car. The confrontation resulted in minor injuries to the deputies involved.
Major Contraband Discovery
Investigators following up on the incident located a motel room in Avoyelles Parish believed to belong to the suspects. Inside, authorities discovered substantial quantities of methamphetamine and marijuana, along with more than 20 cellular phones intended for smuggling into the prison.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement has placed detainers on both illegal aliens. Alvarez remains in custody at the Grant Parish Detention Center awaiting further legal proceedings.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about organized criminal operations targeting correctional facilities and the role of illegal alien gang members in sophisticated contraband smuggling networks.
