Right-Wing EU Parliament Majority Pushes Through Tougher Deportation Rules
The European Parliament approved legislation to expedite deportations of illegal migrants and allow return centers in third countries, drawing applause and controversy.
Video footage from the parliamentary session shows multiple members of the European Parliament rising in applause following the vote, with some audibly chanting “Send them back” in celebration of the measure’s passage.
The legislation marks a significant victory for right-wing and conservative parties who have long pushed for stronger migration enforcement mechanisms. The measure passed with cross-factional support from the European People’s Party, the European Conservatives and Reformists group, and the Europe of Sovereign Nations faction.
Mary Khan, the interior policy spokesperson for the Alternative for Germany delegation and shadow rapporteur for the ESN faction, welcomed the outcome. She emphasized that illegal migrants had for years been able to delay, circumvent, or actively obstruct their deportations. Khan declared that close cooperation between the EPP, ECR, and ESN factions had demonstrated what a right-wing majority can accomplish in practice.
Khan stressed that return centers in third countries must now be established as a high priority, signaling that the legislation’s passage is only the first step in implementing a more robust deportation infrastructure across the European Union.
The EPP, which includes Germany’s Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union among its member parties, played a pivotal role in securing passage of the deportation reform alongside its conservative and right-wing counterparts.
Green MEP Condemns Vote as “Disgusting”
The vote triggered outrage among left-wing members of the European Parliament. Michael Bloss, a member of the Greens faction, took to social media platform X to express his disgust at both the legislative outcome and the celebratory atmosphere among right-wing lawmakers.
Bloss characterized the result and the applause as nauseating, condemning what he described as right-wing and far-right members celebrating the deportation law with chants. His post included video evidence showing Manfred Weber, leader of the EPP group, present during the celebration.
The sharp divide in reactions underscores the deepening ideological split within European institutions over migration policy, border security, and national sovereignty. Conservative and right-wing parties have increasingly united around stricter enforcement measures, while left-wing and green factions continue to oppose deportation acceleration and external processing arrangements.
The new regulation represents one of the most consequential shifts in European migration policy in recent years, granting national governments substantially greater latitude to remove illegal migrants and establishing legal framework for offshore processing facilities that have long been advocated by migration hawks across the continent.
