Russian Illegal Among 10 Gotaways Nabbed Near Texas Border
Texas authorities apprehended ten illegal aliens including a Russian national classified as a Special Interest Alien attempting to evade detection in Starr County under Operation Lone Star.
The apprehension took place during anti-smuggling operations conducted under Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s Operation Lone Star initiative in the border region adjacent to the Rio Grande.
Department of Public Safety spokesman Lt. Chris Olivarez disclosed details of the operation through social media, revealing that the DPS Brush Team intercepted the group after they had successfully crossed the Rio Grande from Mexico into Starr County. The individuals were attempting to move inland as so-called gotaways—a term Border Patrol uses for migrants who avoid immediate apprehension at the border.
Among those detained was a woman from Russia, categorized by U.S. Border Patrol as a Special Interest Alien due to her country of origin. Photographs released by DPS show the woman carrying what appears to be a laptop computer. Special Interest Aliens typically undergo additional scrutiny from federal authorities due to potential national security concerns.
The ten illegal aliens were transferred to Border Patrol agents for processing. Federal sources indicate the Russian national will likely face interviews with the FBI or Department of Homeland Security before any removal proceedings commence.
Governor Abbott referenced the apprehension during his appearance at the Republican Party of Texas state convention in Houston last week, highlighting the ongoing security challenges along the southern border.
Lt. Olivarez emphasized the collaborative nature of the operation, noting that the apprehension demonstrates the effectiveness of coordination between state and federal law enforcement in deterring human smuggling operations and preventing illegal border crossers from reaching the interior of the country.
Despite a reported ninety-seven percent decline in illegal alien gotaways in recent periods, Texas DPS troopers continue active operations to locate and apprehend individuals attempting to bypass detection along the border and in interior counties.
The Starr County operation follows another significant interdiction earlier last week in Brooks County, where DPS troopers stopped a tractor-trailer smuggling human cargo. The driver failed to yield to law enforcement commands, forcing troopers to deploy tire-deflation devices that ultimately caused the tractor to catch fire.
After the vehicle came to a halt, the driver informed troopers he was transporting people in the trailer. Officers rapidly opened the cargo compartment and discovered thirty-nine illegal aliens inside. All were evacuated as flames threatened to consume the entire rig.
Lt. Olivarez characterized the Brooks County incident as a stark illustration of the perilous tactics human smugglers employ in pursuit of their criminal enterprise, placing vulnerable migrants at extreme risk of injury or death.
