A San Francisco Giants pitcher inscribed Genesis 9:16 on his Pride Night cap alongside the mandatory rainbow logo, joining other MLB players who add biblical verses during such events.
Landen Roupp chose to add a silver-inscribed scripture reference next to the LGBTQ pride symbol on his cap, according to New York Post. Television cameras captured the modification, with the verse appearing to be Genesis 9:16, a passage commonly used by Christian athletes during similar events.
The move represents a middle ground taken by some faith-driven players in Major League Baseball who view Pride Night celebrations as conflicting with their religious beliefs. While Roupp wore the team-issued rainbow cap, he added the biblical reference as a counterbalance to the messaging.
Pattern Among Christian Players
Roupp joins a growing list of MLB players who have taken similar actions. Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw inscribed the same Genesis passage on his cap during his team’s Pride event. Former Giants shortstop Nick Ahmed also chose the identical verse for his Pride Night appearance.
The gesture differs from that of Dodgers reliever Blake Treinen, who refused outright to wear his team’s Pride Night cap earlier this month, as New York Post reports.
Biblical Meaning Behind the Choice
Genesis 9:16 reclaims the rainbow as a divine symbol rather than a cultural one. The passage states that when the rainbow appears in the clouds, God will remember His everlasting covenant with all living creatures on earth. For Christian athletes, the verse represents an alternative interpretation of the rainbow’s meaning.
Roupp, now in his third major league season, was raised in rural North Carolina and attended Faith Christian School in Rocky Mount before playing college baseball at UNC Wilmington. His social media profiles feature Philippians 4:13, another popular scripture among Christian athletes.
Giants’ Long Pride History
The San Francisco Giants hold the longest-running Pride celebration of any major league team. The organization became the first professional sports franchise to host an HIV and AIDS awareness game in 1994. Their first official Pride Night took place in 2000, and they began incorporating rainbow imagery into on-field uniforms in 2021.
In 2022, the Giants and Dodgers made history as the first two teams to both wear Pride caps during a single game.
