Raskin Claims Trump Committing Impeachable Offenses
Democrat Representative Jamie Raskin accused President Trump of making impeachable offenses central to his administration while attempting to reshape public memory of the 2020 election results.
Speaking on MSNBC’s “Deadline” program on Friday, Raskin launched a sweeping attack on Trump’s continued questioning of the 2020 election outcome, according to Breitbart News.
The Maryland congressman suggested that Trump could simply avoid impeachment proceedings by ceasing what Raskin characterized as criminal conduct. He went further to allege that beyond what he described as profiteering schemes, the president has fixated on convincing Americans that he won the 2020 contest.
Raskin cited the official Electoral College tally of 306 to 232 and the popular vote margin of more than 7 million votes in favor of Joe Biden. He connected Trump’s election claims to the January 6 Capitol riot, describing it as a violent mob assault on law enforcement and the constitutional transfer of power process.
The Democratic representative then offered a psychological diagnosis of the president, stating that Trump remains obsessed with the 2020 election because he knows he is wrong about the results. Raskin claimed this indicated some deformed core of conscience that compels Trump to revisit what the congressman termed the scene of the crime.
Addressing Republican efforts to expunge Trump’s impeachments, Raskin acknowledged that the Constitution contains no provision for such action. However, he challenged Republicans to introduce a resolution stating their position clearly, suggesting such a vote would force GOP members to go on record supporting Trump’s election claims and the events of January 6.
The original impeachment vote referenced by Raskin passed 232 to 197, with ten Republicans joining all Democrats in favor.
