Trump Taps Former SEC Chief Clayton to Lead Intelligence
President Donald Trump nominated Jay Clayton, currently U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and former SEC Chairman, to serve as Director of National Intelligence.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, the President announced his decision to tap Jay Clayton, who previously served as Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission and led the prestigious law firm Sullivan & Cromwell. Trump praised Clayton as one of the most respected figures in the legal community and called on the Senate to confirm him swiftly for the DNI position and Cabinet role.
The nomination comes after Trump faced pressure to select a different candidate than Bill Pulte, who currently directs the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Clayton’s name was reportedly put forward by CIA Director John Ratcliffe, who recommended him for the intelligence community’s top post.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune signaled quick action on the nomination, describing Clayton as a highly qualified professional with the right skill set for handling complex challenges. Pulte is expected to remain as acting DNI while the Senate reviews Clayton’s nomination.
During his tenure as U.S. Attorney in Manhattan, Clayton oversaw the review of documents connected to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. His office also pursued criminal charges against Nicolás Maduro, the Venezuelan regime leader.
Clayton’s extensive background spans both the private and public sectors. As SEC Chairman, he played a key role in shaping financial regulatory policy. His leadership of Sullivan & Cromwell, one of the world’s most prominent law firms, further established his reputation in corporate and securities law before entering government service.
