Republican Steve Hilton Advances in California Gubernatorial Race
Republican Steve Hilton will face Democrat Xavier Becerra in California's gubernatorial race after finishing second in the primary with 25.10 percent of votes to Becerra's 27.67 percent.
According to Breitbart News, Becerra captured 2,177,556 votes, representing 27.67 percent of the total, while Hilton finished in second place with 1,975,062 votes, or 25.10 percent, according to Decision Desk HQ.
Democrat candidate Tom Steyer placed third in the primary with 1,759,328 votes, earning 22.36 percent of the vote.
President Donald Trump threw his support behind Hilton in April, praising him as someone who has witnessed California’s decline under Democrat control. In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote that Hilton is a truly fine man who has observed how the once-great state has deteriorated. Trump criticized Governor Gavin Newsom and state Democrats for presiding over mass exodus, rising crime, and the nation’s highest tax burden.
Following the June 2 primary, Hilton took aim at California’s slow vote-counting process, suggesting that the state’s inability to tally ballots efficiently has become an international embarrassment.
Nearly a week after the election, Hilton posted on X criticizing Governor Newsom’s absence from addressing the counting delays. He questioned where Newsom was during what he termed the state’s election shambles, noting the governor rejected his proposal to accelerate the process. Hilton argued that Californians deserve better than a disengaged, do-nothing governor and called for change.
As reported by Breitbart News, The Hill noted that Becerra benefited from his statewide campaign experience and his tenure in the Biden administration. He was also characterized as having appeal among Latino voters.
