The pontiff presided over a Corpus Christi celebration at Plaza de Cibeles that featured elaborate floral carpets prepared specifically for the Eucharistic procession, marking his first visit to Spain in fifteen years and underscoring the vitality of traditional Catholic devotion in a nation where secularization has steadily advanced.

Crowds packed several rows deep along the procession route cheered as Pope Leo XIV arrived in his popemobile, with many young attendees shouting This is the youth of the pope! The turnout reflected widespread enthusiasm for the weeklong papal visit that began Saturday and includes stops in Madrid, Barcelona, and the Canary Islands.

Pope Leo XIV presides at Holy Mass, the Corpus Christi Procession, and Eucharistic Benediction at Plaza de Cibeles on June 07, 2026 in Madrid, Spain. Pope Leo XIV is making an apostolic journey to Spain from June 6–12, marking the first papal visit to the country since Benedict XVI visited in 2011. During the trip Pope Leo travels to Madrid, Barcelona, and the Canary Islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Many of his planned engagements center on issues around marginalized people, youth, and migrants, alongside meetings with the Spanish royals, government figures, and church officials. Spanish organizers prepared sixteen flower carpets along the half-kilometer procession route, utilizing more than 30,000 flowers arranged by a florists association from Galicia. The carpets featured yellow and white blooms representing the colors of the Holy See flag, along with decorative elements including the papal keys.

In his homily, Pope Leo emphasized that Spain’s Corpus Christi processions and floral displays represent far more than cultural exhibition. This is not an exhibition, a remnant of folklore or a simple display of beauty, he declared, calling the tradition a profession of faith in the risen Christ who continues to walk among humanity.

The pontiff challenged Spain to ensure its religious heritage remains a living school of faith rather than devolving into a museum piece. He stressed that the religiosity that has defined Spain for centuries must continue to instruct contemporary believers and future generations.

Ancient Tradition Meets Modern Faith

Following the Mass, Pope Leo XIV carried a gilded monstrance containing the Eucharistic host over the flower carpets as children scattered additional petals before him and spectators tossed petals from behind security barricades. The tradition of creating and then trampling elaborate floral displays dates back two centuries and represents an offering to the Eucharist.

The remarkable turnout began Saturday evening when an estimated 600,000 young Spaniards attended a vigil service where they knelt in prolonged silent prayer alongside the pontiff. The demonstration suggested genuine interest in Catholic faith persists among Spanish youth despite widespread secularization, as Breitbart News reports.

During the vigil, Pope Leo encouraged attendees not to fear considering vocations to priesthood, religious life, or other church service. One young couple, Irati Valda and Javier Hormazal, held a cardboard sign announcing their upcoming June 13 wedding and received the papal blessing.

Valda marveled at the sight of half a million young people gathered in silence, calling it an experience that occurs only once in a lifetime.

UNESCO Recognition for Cultural Heritage

The flower carpet tradition remains popular throughout Latin America as well, where elaborate sand designs also accompany Corpus Christi processions. Poland has already secured UNESCO recognition for its Corpus Christi flower carpet tradition, while Spain’s Galicia region seeks to have its observance listed as part of the world’s intangible cultural heritage alongside other countries.

Local organizers reported that 1.2 million people attended Sunday’s Mass and procession on a brilliant spring morning, with additional crowds unable to gain entry to the central plaza and surrounding streets.

The papal visit to Spain runs through June 12 and includes meetings with Spanish royals, government officials, and church leaders. A highlight of the itinerary features the inauguration of the recently completed Tower of Jesus Christ spire at the Basílica de la Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of architect Antoni Gaudí.

Many of Pope Leo XIV’s planned engagements center on issues affecting marginalized populations, youth, and migrants, reflecting his pastoral priorities during the apostolic journey.
