Knife attacker wounds three at Swiss train station shouting Allahu Akbar
A knife attacker wounded three people at a Swiss railway station near Zurich, with witnesses reporting he shouted "Allahu Akbar" before police detained the 31-year-old suspect.
The incident unfolded at approximately 8.30am local time at Winterthur station, according to Brussels Signal. Swiss police detained a 31-year-old Swiss national at the scene shortly after the attack.
The three victims—Swiss nationals aged 28, 43, and 52—were transported to hospital for treatment. One victim remains in life-threatening condition, while the other two sustained moderate injuries, local broadcaster blue News reported.
Passersby who witnessed the attack immediately raised the alarm and provided first aid before emergency services arrived on scene.
Terror Motive Under Investigation
Winterthur city police initially responded to the incident before the Zurich cantonal police force assumed control of the investigation. The cantonal police confirmed that the motive for the crime is under active investigation, but officers declined to provide details about the attacker’s background or confirm whether the assault is being treated as terrorism.
An eyewitness speaking to the newspaper Tages-Anzeiger stated that the assailant had shouted “Allahu Akbar”—an Arabic phrase meaning “God is great”—during the attack. A second witness corroborated this account, though police have not officially confirmed these reports.
One witness described how a teacher positioned herself in front of her students to shield them from the violence. Another witness reported seeing what appeared to be a sharp, serrated kitchen knife on the ground at the scene.
Large-Scale Police Response
The Swiss newspaper Blick obtained video footage that appears to show a man fleeing from the station concourse. The attack triggered a substantial police operation, with authorities cordoning off sections of the station.
blue News noted that unverified claims about the suspect have circulated on social media, emphasizing that the presumption of innocence applies to the detained individual.
Rising Pattern Across Europe
Knife attacks in public spaces have become an increasingly common concern throughout European nations in recent years, with transportation hubs frequently targeted in such assaults.
Switzerland, while not a European Union member state, sits at the geographic heart of the continent and maintains extensive bilateral agreements with the bloc.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the motive behind the attack.
