According to Edward Griffiths writing in GB News, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has initiated a significant reshuffle of her senior team as the party braces for the possibility of an early General Election.
Dame Priti, who previously served as Immigration Minister, will not be leaving the party’s upper ranks entirely. Instead, she is set to assume a new senior position heading up the Conservatives’ international engagement and relations work.
Tugendhat Returns From Backbenches
Tom Tugendhat, who represents Tonbridge in Parliament, has been serving as a backbencher since mounting an unsuccessful leadership challenge in 2024. The former soldier and security minister brings substantial experience in defence and foreign policy to the role.
One of his primary responsibilities will be strengthening the Conservative message on defence matters, which party sources describe as among the Tories’ central organising principles.
The MP confirmed his return to frontbench duties over the recent bank holiday weekend during meetings with officials in Taiwan, where discussions centred on the threat posed by China.
Beijing Hawk Takes Foreign Brief
Tugendhat is widely regarded as one of Parliament’s most vocal sceptics regarding China. He has been particularly outspoken in his opposition to Beijing’s planned new super embassy facility in London.
The reshuffle represents the latest move by Badenoch to improve Conservative polling numbers and create distance between her leadership and figures associated with the Johnson administration.
Party insiders view the appointment as a strategic effort to sharpen the Conservative stance on national security and foreign threats, particularly from authoritarian regimes.
