Mexico Refuses to Probe Former President AMLO’s Son

Mexico's Attorney General's Office denied investigating former President López Obrador's son over fuel trafficking allegations after the U.S. revoked his visa without explanation.

The announcement came shortly after the younger López himself disclosed that the United States Department of State had revoked his visa without providing an explanation, according to Breitbart News.

In a brief statement released Monday afternoon, the FGR declared that no evidence or protected witnesses exist linking Andrés Manuel López Beltrán to the illicit fuel trade. The office further stated that he is not currently under investigation, dismissing media reports citing an FGR probe and witness testimony as false.

The clarification follows López Beltrán’s making headlines across Mexico after revealing his visa had been cancelled by the State Department. Breitbart News reports that he subsequently sent a letter to U.S. President Donald Trump in which he characterized America as being in decline and demanded the firing of Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Undersecretary of State Christopher Landau for their role in revoking his travel privileges.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has also weighed in on the matter, characterizing the visa revocation as politically motivated and an instance of American interference in Mexican internal affairs.

This is not the first time Sheinbaum has made such accusations. As Breitbart News reports, she made similar claims following the U.S. Department of Justice’s criminal indictment of Ruben Rocha Moya, the sitting governor of Sinaloa, on drug trafficking conspiracy and weapons charges. The indictment alleges that Rocha Moya and nine other senior state officials collaborated with the Sinaloa Cartel in exchange for bribes and political influence.

Rather than cooperating with U.S. authorities to arrest and extradite the wanted individuals, Sheinbaum has publicly defended Rocha Moya. She has insisted there is no evidence of misconduct on his part and characterized the indictment as politically motivated, designed to damage Mexico’s ruling party, MORENA.

All three figures — Sheinbaum, López Beltrán, and Rocha Moya — are members of the MORENA party, as are numerous other Mexican politicians who have also had their U.S. visas revoked in recent months.
