Trump Hints at Possible Emergency Declaration for Midterms
President Trump suggested he may declare a national security emergency on elections after commentator Wayne Allyn Root proposed using emergency powers to implement voter ID requirements nationwide.
During an appearance on Real America Voice’s America Speaks program, according to Breitbart News, Wayne Allyn Root proposed that the president invoke emergency powers to implement voter identification requirements nationwide ahead of upcoming elections.
Root referenced the 1983 Supreme Court decision in Immigration and Naturalization Service v. Chadha as legal precedent supporting such a move. He argued that the president possesses authority to declare a national security emergency for elections, and that under the Reagan-era ruling, such a declaration could only be overturned by a two-thirds vote in both chambers of Congress.
The conservative host suggested this path could bypass congressional gridlock, noting the Senate’s failure to act on election integrity legislation before its August recess. Root claimed the emergency declaration would enable implementation of photo ID requirements, proof of citizenship mandates, and limitations on mail-in voting.
When presented with the scenario, Trump offered a cryptic but suggestive response. Stranger things have happened, okay? I’ll leave it at that, the president said.
The exchange follows the Senate’s failure to advance the SAVE America Act before lawmakers departed for their August break. The legislation would mandate voter identification, require proof of citizenship for voter registration, and significantly restrict universal mail-in balloting with limited exceptions.
The bill also includes provisions to codify several Trump executive actions, including prohibitions on transgender medical procedures for minors and measures keeping biological males out of women’s athletic competitions.
Passage of the SAVE America Act faces steep procedural hurdles in the Senate. Current filibuster rules require sixty votes to advance legislation, meaning at least seven Democrats would need to support the bill alongside all Republicans. Trump previously urged Senate Republicans to cancel their recess and eliminate the filibuster to pass the measure, but Senate leadership declined to pursue that course of action.
