Christodoulides to Brief National Council on UN, EU Visits
Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides will brief the National Council on renewed UN and EU efforts to resolve the island's division following recent visits by key international envoys.
The session, scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m., comes after separate visits to Cyprus by UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Raffaele Fitto, the newly appointed EU Special Representative for the Cyprus problem, according to in-cyprus (Philenews).
President Christodoulides announced on Saturday that technocratic-level preparations have already commenced with the United Nations to establish the groundwork for a successful, expanded conference aimed at resolving the decades-long division of the island.
The preparatory work will continue throughout August, Christodoulides confirmed, signaling sustained diplomatic momentum following the high-level visits.
Renewed International Focus
The Cyprus problem remains one of Europe’s longest-running territorial disputes, with the northern third of the island occupied by Turkish forces since 1974 and administered by the Turkish Pseudostate in Northern Cyprus, an entity recognized only by Ankara.
The recent visits by Guterres and Fitto represent renewed international attention to the issue, with both the UN and EU seeking to facilitate a comprehensive settlement between the Greek Cypriot government and Turkish Cypriot leadership.
The National Council, which includes party leaders and serves as Cyprus’s primary advisory body on national issues, will receive a detailed briefing on the outcomes of these diplomatic engagements and the path forward for negotiations.
