Fetterman Doubts Blanche Confirmation as Attorney General
Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman predicts Todd Blanche will fail to win Senate confirmation as attorney general due to Republican opposition over a controversial $1.8 billion DOJ fund.
During an appearance on CNN’s “The Arena” on Friday, the Democrat senator stated he would vote against the nomination and suggested Blanche lacks the support necessary for confirmation in the chamber, according to Breitbart News.
When pressed by host Kasie Hunt about whether Republican opposition to Blanche extends beyond the publicly vocal senators, Fetterman indicated the resistance appears widespread within the GOP caucus.
The senator pointed specifically to what he characterized as a $1.8 billion slush fund controversy that has drawn fire from multiple Republican lawmakers. Fetterman claimed he had not encountered a single Republican senator expressing support for the financial arrangement in question.
Republican Opposition Centering on Financial Issues
Fetterman identified several key Republican senators whose concerns could prove fatal to the nomination. Senator John Cornyn, Senator Bill Cassidy, and Senator Thom Tillis have all raised objections to aspects of Blanche’s nomination, particularly regarding DOJ financial matters.
The Pennsylvania lawmaker went further, suggesting the financial arrangement at issue may be unconstitutional based on available information about its structure and purpose.
He predicted that Blanche would likely serve in an acting capacity for as long as statutory limits permit rather than receiving formal Senate confirmation. The senator characterized Blanche as having damaged the political standing of several Republican colleagues, making their support unlikely.
Senate Math Presents Challenge
Fetterman outlined the mathematical challenge facing the nomination, noting that with Senator Mitch McConnell currently dealing with health issues and at least three Republicans expressing reservations, the path to confirmation appears blocked.
The Democrat senator emphasized that no support would be forthcoming from his own party, leaving Blanche dependent entirely on Republican votes in a narrowly divided Senate.
The opposition from senior Republicans like Cornyn and Tillis represents a significant complication for the Trump administration’s efforts to install its preferred leadership at the Department of Justice.
