Fetterman Regrets Dismissing Lab Leak Theory as Conspiracy

The Democrat lawmaker made the surprising admission during testimony from Anthony Fauci, the former head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, according to Breitbart News.

Fetterman, who has increasingly broken ranks with his party on various issues, expressed remorse for allowing political tribalism to cloud his judgment on the virus origins question. He told the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs that the lab leak hypothesis initially seemed logical given the proximity of an advanced virology laboratory to the outbreak, but that he rejected it because it became associated with conservative circles.

The Pennsylvania senator called on lawmakers to pursue truth regardless of which political faction raises concerns, warning against letting partisan loyalties obstruct legitimate scientific inquiry during future national crises.

Ahead of Wednesday’s proceedings, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky released Fauci’s diary entries after subpoenaing the former health official. The documents shed light on Fauci’s daily activities and reveal what critics describe as a preoccupation with his celebrity status both domestically and internationally.

The diary entries expose a significant contradiction in Fauci’s public and private positions. A January 2020 entry shows Fauci privately acknowledging that scientists believed the coronavirus likely originated from a laboratory, even as he publicly condemned such suggestions as baseless conspiracy theories, as Breitbart News reports.

During the hearing itself, Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination more than one hundred times while Republican senators pressed him on both his diaries and his pandemic response decisions. Senator Paul announced that a panel vote would be held to cite Fauci for contempt following his refusal to cooperate with questioning.
