Democrats Push to Oust Embattled DNC Chair: Report
The Democratic National Committee is in turmoil as Chair Ken Martin faces criticism for throwing a phone at a staffer's desk, sparking HR complaints and concerns over his leadership.
According to Breitbart News, Ken Martin threw a mobile phone at a junior aide’s desk earlier this month in what witnesses described as a fit of frustration, prompting a formal human resources complaint against the embattled party chief.
Three sources confirmed to the New York Times that Martin was subsequently required to meet with human resources over the incident. While accounts varied on the force with which the phone was thrown, approximately half a dozen individuals corroborated the episode, with general agreement that the phone was aimed at a desk rather than the staff member directly.
Paranoia and Internal Discord
Martin, who was elected to a term scheduled to run until 2029, has reportedly been making dark jokes about the longevity of his tenure and confronted the Democratic Party’s finance director this year over suspicions of an internal coup attempt.
The DNC Chair has demanded assurances before agreeing to meet with the party’s senior congressional leadership—Senator Chuck Schumer and Representative Hakeem Jeffries—that they would not call for his resignation. Non-disclosure agreements have been introduced for top officers, further illustrating what even Martin’s allies acknowledge as growing paranoia.
Botched Election Autopsy Undermines Confidence
Trust in Martin’s leadership has eroded significantly following his mishandling of a promised post-mortem analysis of the 2024 election. The DNC Chair initially refused to release the document, only reversing course after facing intense backlash from within the party.
When the report was finally published in May, it proved incomplete and reportedly contained damaging internal DNC annotations that undercut its credibility. Combined with a poor podcast performance, the episode weakened confidence among both donors and officials. Martin has largely vanished from national television appearances since.
Staff Reprimands and Vanishing Act
Martin has publicly berated staff over information leaks from party headquarters. Four individuals who heard his remarks recalled him stating: It pisses me off when I see leaks out of this building. No more of that shit. No more.
The DNC Chair also reportedly observed “a lot of down faces” and “people hanging their heads,” urging staff to keep their spirits up while emphasising that his fortunes were tied to theirs. Sources say Martin has not addressed the entire DNC staff since that encounter.
Financial Crisis Deepens
The Democratic National Committee is facing a dire financial situation, reportedly carrying $2 million in debt despite securing a $15 million loan last year. High interest payments and principal repayments that began in January have compounded the crisis, while the Republican National Committee maintains nearly $130 million in available funds.
Traditionally, the DNC transfers millions of dollars each election cycle to sister committees focused on winning House and Senate seats. However, party officials have privately informed congressional leaders that no such transfers will occur this year due to the cash shortage.
Democratic Party headquarters has even asked vendors to delay sending invoices until after the midterm elections, according to reports.
Questionable Spending Priorities
Tensions have flared over Martin’s strategic decisions and spending patterns. The DNC Chair has prioritised directing more resources to state parties but has bizarrely allocated funds to U.S. territories that have no bearing on congressional control, causing concern among Democratic leadership.
Approximately $840,000 from the DNC and an affiliated fundraising committee has been sent to Guam, Puerto Rico, the Northern Marianas, the Virgin Islands, and American Samoa since early last year—far exceeding historical spending levels on these territories.
The single largest expenditure during Martin’s chairmanship was a staggering $7.3 million spent purchasing the remnants of former Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign email list from her unsuccessful 2024 presidential run.
Democrats both inside and outside the committee are now openly questioning where exactly party funds have been allocated, as financial transparency becomes another flashpoint in Martin’s troubled tenure.
