Democrat Mark Kelly Calls Trump ‘Disabled President’ in Interview
Arizona Senator Mark Kelly called Trump a "disabled president" when asked about his wife Gabby Giffords' health condition and whether America could accept a disabled First Lady.
The remarks came during an interview with The Atlantic’s Mark Leibovich, according to Breitbart News, when Kelly was asked whether he believed America was prepared to have a disabled First Lady.
Rather than addressing the question directly, Kelly turned his response into an attack on Trump, claiming that in his view, we have a disabled president right now.
The comments have drawn attention as Kelly, a former astronaut, is reportedly considering a presidential run in 2028. His inflammatory characterization of Trump comes as the senator has positioned himself as one of the administration’s most vocal critics in Congress.
Kelly is married to gun control advocate and former Representative Gabby Giffords, who survived an assassination attempt in 2011 when she was shot in the head during a mass shooting. The attack ended Giffords’s congressional career and left her with severe brain damage affecting the area that controls speech.
The shooting resulted in Giffords developing non-fluent aphasia, a condition that impairs a person’s ability to communicate events or stories, though it does not affect intelligence, The Atlantic noted. Kelly subsequently left his career as an astronaut to become her primary caregiver while launching his own political career.
The Arizona senator has made attacking the Trump administration a hallmark of his public statements. In a recent interview with MSNBC, Kelly accused the administration of “flailing” on Iran policy and lacking a coherent strategic vision.
Kelly told the network that while service members understand the risks of deployment, what they don’t expect is a president taking the country into conflict without an explainable strategic goal, plan, timeline, or exit strategy. He cited his own experience flying 39 combat missions in the first Gulf War as context for his criticism.
The senator has also claimed that Trump is attempting to silence him because he calls out the president’s actions, using vulgar language to characterize his critiques of the administration.
Kelly’s escalating rhetoric against Trump appears timed with his reported exploration of a 2028 presidential bid, positioning himself as a leading Democratic voice of opposition to the current administration.
