War “touches” Romania – Drone hits apartment building
A Russian kamikaze drone struck an apartment building in Galați, Romania on May 29, injuring residents and prompting an emergency national security meeting.
On the evening of May 29, the war in Ukraine “reached” Romania. An unmanned aircraft, which according to reports was a Russian kamikaze drone, entered the country’s airspace and crashed with great force into the roof of an apartment building in the city of Galați, near the border with the Odessa region.
The collision caused a powerful explosion and a large fire in the tenth-floor apartment. Authorities hastily evacuated approximately seventy residents amid panic conditions. A woman and her minor child suffered minor burns and were taken to the hospital.
The moment of impact was captured on video that quickly circulated and caused shock.

Romanian radar had detected the threat in time. At 01:09 in the morning, two F-16 fighter jets took off from Fetești air base, along with an IAR 330 SOCAT helicopter. The pilots were ordered to shoot down the drone, but military authorities ultimately decided not to open fire. The reason was the great risk that debris would fall on a residential area and cause mass casualties.
Romanian President Nikushor Dan characterized the incident as the most serious event ever to strike the country’s territory. Through his Facebook page, he announced the emergency convening of the Supreme Council of National Defense at 11:00 in the morning. A full investigation has already begun, while teams of experts are collecting and analyzing the debris to confirm the origin of the drone. Emergency services, police, and intelligence services are working at the site.
NATO and UN Response
Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs immediately informed partners in the European Union and the NATO Secretary General. At the same time, the country appealed to the UN Security Council, urgently requesting additional means to counter drones.
The climate is further intensified by information, according to Reuters, that shortly before, a second drone was detected in northwestern Romania. It did not carry explosives, a fact that shows the country’s airspace is experiencing repeated violations.
The military conflict in Ukraine casts its heavy shadow even on neighboring NATO member countries. Romania is now on high alert, while developments are being closely monitored by all allies.
