British forces detained the sanctioned oil tanker Smyrtos in the English Channel, suspected of being part of Russia's shadow fleet used to evade international sanctions.

The vessel, identified as the Smyrtos, was intercepted on Sunday by armed British personnel in what the United Kingdom’s Defense Ministry has described as the first UK-led operation of this nature. Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the action as part of ongoing efforts to disrupt Moscow’s ability to fund its military operations in Ukraine.

The tanker is now being held and monitored off England’s southern coastline while authorities conduct a full investigation into its activities. British officials confirmed the operation was carried out in close coordination with French authorities, who have previously intercepted multiple vessels linked to the shadow fleet network.

Intelligence assessments indicate Russia has assembled a fleet comprising hundreds of ships designed specifically to evade Western sanctions imposed over the war in Ukraine. These vessels often operate under flags of convenience, use falsified documentation, and engage in ship-to-ship transfers to obscure the origin and destination of Russian oil exports.

This operation delivers yet another blow to Russia, Starmer stated, warning those supporting Putin’s war machine that they cannot evade accountability.

UK authorities emphasized that such enforcement actions directly impact the resources sustaining Russian aggression in Ukraine while diminishing Moscow’s capacity to threaten security across Europe and beyond.

The shadow fleet has become a critical component of Russia’s strategy to maintain oil revenue despite comprehensive international sanctions. Western governments have increasingly prioritized disrupting these maritime smuggling networks as part of broader efforts to constrain the Kremlin’s wartime financing.
