According to Junge Freiheit, the Labour politician denounced the disorder on Tuesday evening, stating there was no justification for exploiting the tragedy to incite violence and unrest. She warned that those responsible would face the full force of the law.

Hours earlier, some participants among approximately 1,000 demonstrators had attacked police officers with bins and other objects, prompting officers to deploy pepper spray. The crowd demanded that the local police chief dismiss the officers responsible for arresting Nowak and compensate his family. Some protesters called on officers to kneel for the murdered 18-year-old, in a reference to the Black Lives Matter movement, Junge Freiheit reports.

Police Promise Review of Anti-Discrimination Guidelines

British police announced they would review existing anti-discrimination guidelines following the Nowak case revelations. Gavin Stephens, chairman of the National Police Chiefs’ Council, said changes would be made where necessary, though he emphasized the current guidelines were designed to improve policing quality. He added that people from black communities have the lowest levels of trust in police.

The review comes after new evidence emerged showing that Nowak was arrested despite suffering life-threatening injuries. The British teenager was killed in December with a Sikh ceremonial knife. The attacker, Vickrum Digwa, and his brother Gupreet had reported a racist assault to officers. Bodycam footage released Monday shows a police officer denying that an attack on Nowak had occurred.

Reform UK Pledges to End Two-Tier Policing

Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party announced it would replace current anti-discrimination guidelines with an “Equal Treatment Act” if it wins power. The party stated this would end two-tier policing practices. Reform UK’s home affairs spokesman Zia Yusuf claimed that white people are now demonstrably the biggest victims of racism in Britain.

Yusuf also called for eliminating the exemption from knife ban laws for Sikh ceremonial knives. However, Home Secretary Mahmood rejected the proposal, arguing that carrying a knife for religious purposes is one thing, but using it is quite another.

Killer Sentenced to Over 20 Years

Vickrum Digwa was sentenced last Monday to 20 years and 190 days in prison. The 23-year-old Indian national had previously been arrested in 2023 after allegedly stealing several knives worth approximately 1,150 euros from a Sikh temple in Southampton. Several members of the Sikh community described him after the trial as a pathological liar with poor impulse control, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Digwa’s mother, Kiran Kaur, concealed the murder weapon in her home after the victim’s death. She currently faces charges of accessory to murder, with a verdict expected on July 17. British prosecutors have also brought illegal weapons possession charges against Gupreet and their father.
