UK Govt Told to Ban Trans-Extremist Hammer Attack Group

Lord Walney, formerly Labour MP John Woodcock, served as an advisor on political violence under the previous Conservative government and now argues that lessons must be learned from the protracted banning process of Palestinian Action, according to Breitbart News.

Writing in The Times, the life peer drew parallels between Bash Back and Palestinian Action, noting that the latter presented itself publicly as peaceful while privately orchestrating violent campaigns. He urged the government not to repeat past mistakes by delaying action against emerging extremist movements.

Bash Back has claimed responsibility for multiple attacks on politicians and institutions, including vandalism targeting a government minister’s offices and the Equality and Human Rights Commission. The group actively promotes hammer attacks and distributes instructional materials encouraging supporters to select political targets.

Lord Walney’s intervention comes in the wake of the brutal murder of veteran conservative politician Ann Widdecombe, who was struck 21 times on the head with a hammer earlier this month. While emphasising that no one should prejudge active legal proceedings, the former advisor observed that Bash Back has withdrawn none of its violent imagery or guidance following the killing.

An organisation genuinely committed to non-violence would have paused, Walney noted, highlighting that the group continues to display masked, hammer-wielding activists and instructional materials urging attacks on political figures.

The government response to Lord Walney’s call proved noncommittal. A spokesman issued a standard statement affirming that while protest rights are fundamental to democracy, intimidation and violent behaviour will face the full force of the law.

Bash Back Rejects Terrorist Label

The transgender militant group responded to Lord Walney’s article via their Blue Sky social media account, launching personal attacks against the lawmaker while defending their operations. Bash Back claimed to be a non-violent direct action group demanding total liberation of trans people, asserting they do not condone physical harm to any human being.

The group characterised proscription as a tool of control wielded by the ruling class against those challenging power, declaring they will not be intimidated.

In their response, Bash Back attacked Lord Walney’s credentials and character, labelling him a lackey, a right-wing authoritarian who despises dissent, and a racist who allegedly bullied staff. The group questioned why anyone should heed his counsel.

Pattern of Extremism and Intimidation

Lord Walney identified a familiar pattern in Bash Back’s radicalisation process, whereby supporters are encouraged to believe extreme measures are justified while opponents face dehumanisation and intimidation.

Beyond property damage and intimidation campaigns, Bash Back has allegedly engaged in cyber attacks, as Breitbart News reports. The Free Speech Union claimed in January that its databases were hacked and published, exposing donor identities.

Lord Young, chairman of the Free Speech Union, condemned the organisation’s tactics, noting that Bash Back openly boasts about breaking the law and encourages supporters to steal hammers for direct action against Members of Parliament. He vowed that neither the Union nor its members would be cowed by such intimidation.

Lord Walney was a Blairite Labour MP who clashed with his party during the Jeremy Corbyn era as Labour shifted hard-left and faced multiple antisemitism scandals. A former chair of Labour Friends of Israel, Woodcock eventually resigned from the party following accusations of sending inappropriate emails to a staffer. He was subsequently elevated to the peerage by the Conservative government.

The former advisor’s warning emphasises that governments cannot afford to wait until direct action movements become entrenched before taking decisive action against groups promoting political violence.
