UK Government to Force Social Media to Promote BBC Content
Britain's government plans to require social media platforms to algorithmically boost legacy news outlets like the BBC, framing the mandate as fighting disinformation amid concerns about state information control.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s administration is planning to hold discussions this week with technology companies including Facebook and YouTube about mandating the promotion of state-funded broadcasters such as the BBC and Channel 4, according to Breitbart News.
The scheme extends beyond propping up publicly owned media, as the Labour government reportedly also wants private legacy outlets like ITV to receive algorithmic preferential treatment on American-owned social networks.
Anonymous sources within the Department for Culture, Media and Sport told Breitbart News that the initiative aims to help British citizens “discover trusted news sources” online, suggesting government officials believe they should determine which outlets deserve audience reach.
Government figures reportedly attribute declining legacy media viewership to social media algorithms rather than acknowledging that consumers may simply prefer alternative content sources over traditional broadcasters.
The designation of the BBC as a “trusted” source appears questionable given recent major scandals involving the broadcaster’s journalistic integrity.
Last November, BBC Director General Tim Davie and BBC News CEO Deborah Turness were compelled to resign following a January 6th documentary that “materially misled” viewers by deceptively editing President Donald Trump’s speech to falsely suggest he had incited supporters to riot.
Weeks later, the BBC admitted to spreading false information about President Trump allegedly wanting to place former Congresswoman Liz Cheney before a “firing squad,” when Trump had actually employed the common rhetorical “chicken hawk” argument questioning whether warmongers would personally fight in conflicts they advocate.
More recently this month, the broadcaster issued an apology to Brexit architect Nigel Farage after one of its presenters repeatedly shared fabricated quotes attributed to the Reform UK leader.
The algorithmic manipulation proposal forms part of a wider government offensive to control British citizens’ online access, including an imminent ban prohibiting all under-16s from using social media platforms.
Civil liberties advocates warn the age restriction measure will necessitate digital identification requirements for all adult internet users to verify they are not minors. Additional concerns center on children circumventing restrictions through VPN services, which government officials have suggested may also face prohibition.
