U.S. Says Iran Agreed to No Nuclear Weapons
Iran and the U.S. remain in tense negotiations over frozen assets and nuclear guarantees, with conflicting accounts revealing deep disagreements on proposed terms.
Iranian state media reported on May 30th that a draft memorandum of understanding with Washington includes provisions for releasing $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets, according to The European Conservative. The state television report claimed that the United States has pledged to provide Iran with full access to the funds within 60 days, allowing the resources to be transferred and spent in banks of Iran’s choosing without restrictions.
The White House dismissed a similar report earlier in the week as fabricated, highlighting the gulf between the two nations’ public characterizations of the negotiations.
The Iranian claims emerged just one day after President Donald Trump issued his own detailed description of a potential agreement aimed at ending the ongoing conflict, key elements of which were promptly disputed by Iranian sources.
Tehran Demands Rights Guarantees
Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, stated on May 31st that Tehran will not approve any deal with the United States that fails to secure the rights of Iranian citizens. In a video broadcast on state television, Ghalibaf said his government will not approve any agreement until it is certain that the rights of the Iranian people have been upheld.
Tehran has also insisted that Lebanon must be included in any end to hostilities despite ongoing fighting in the region. Beirut has accused Israel of pursuing a scorched-earth policy as its forces continue to advance and carry out airstrikes targeting the Iran-backed terrorist group Hezbollah.
Trump Secures Nuclear Weapons Pledge
President Trump revealed on Sunday that he had obtained guarantees from Iran that it would not develop nuclear weapons, even as reports indicated he had sent a tougher peace proposal back to Tehran. In an interview with his daughter-in-law Lara Trump on her Fox News program broadcast on the night of May 30th, the president emphasized that securing this commitment was his primary objective.
Trump signaled he was prepared to take his time with the negotiations while keeping all options on the table, warning that if the United States does not achieve its desired outcome, the situation will end in a different way.
