U.S. Marines will now incorporate Australia into a global prepositioning program, according to Breitbart News, which cited tender documents revealing the strategic shift as Washington and its regional allies restructure their military alignments in response to Beijing’s territorial ambitions.

An existing stockpile currently held in Melbourne, the capital of Victoria state, will be relocated to U.S.-controlled warehouses at the Bandiana military base in rural Victoria, marking a consolidation of American military assets on Australian soil.

Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles addressed the growing American military footprint during remarks to reporters in Western Australia, emphasizing its dual benefit to both nations.

We are seeing a growing US footprint in Australia, Marles stated, describing it as vital for building Australian military capability while strengthening the nation’s overall national security posture.

The defence minister explained that an American logistics footprint represents a key component of the United States’ comprehensive force posture across the Australian continent.

The U.S. Navy has contracted a global defense firm to deploy approximately 110 engineers, mechanics, material handlers and safety specialists to oversee the Australian stockpile, which includes crew-served weapons systems, according to the tender documents.

While Australia maintains a longstanding policy prohibiting foreign military bases on its territory, roughly 2,000 U.S. personnel rotate through northern Australia annually between April and October under the Marine Rotational Force Darwin program. The arrangement operates under a 25-year agreement established in 2011, as Breitbart News previously reported.

Australian officials are also evaluating a proposal to grant the United States access to Australian territory for operating long-range reconnaissance drones capable of conducting surveillance missions over the South-West Pacific and potentially beyond.

A rotating contingent of U.S.-commanded nuclear submarines is scheduled to begin operations from Western Australia next year, representing another significant expansion of American naval presence in the region.

Marles characterized the substantial American military presence in the Asia Pacific as a necessary counterbalance to China’s extensive military expansion across the region.
