Turkish Gunman Shot by Police After Opening Fire at Dresden Supermarket

A Turkish national with a lengthy criminal record, including previous convictions for attempted murder, opened fire on police outside a Dresden supermarket Wednesday morning before being shot and wounded by officers who returned fire.

The armed confrontation unfolded around 8:20 a.m. outside a Netto grocery store in Dresden’s Friedrichstadt district after emergency calls reported a man brandishing a weapon and threatening members of the public, according to Remix News.

Mehmet Ü., 41, was armed with a musket-style rifle when police arrived on scene. The Turkish citizen allegedly discharged one round at responding officers, who then returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times. He was transported to a local hospital and is expected to survive his injuries.

Witnesses at the scene reported that the suspect shouted “Allahu Akbar” before the gunfire exchange. A construction worker in the area told local outlet TAG24 that the man had been making Islamic declarations prior to the arrival of law enforcement.

“He shouted ‘Allahu Akbar,’ so we ducked down and ran,” the witness stated.

Video footage captured by a local resident from a nearby balcony shows the moment police opened fire on the armed suspect, who continued shouting “Allahu Akbar” while lying wounded on the pavement in a pool of blood.

Area residents and local business owners have come forward claiming that Mehmet Ü. had exhibited threatening and unstable behavior in the weeks leading up to the incident. Multiple neighbors reported that he would peer through their windows and told people he was “God’s warrior and that a curse would befall us.”

Police had also received complaints about the man regularly screaming to himself inside his apartment at all hours of the day and night.

Serious Criminal History Raises Questions

German media outlets have confirmed that the Turkish national had served substantial prison time for two counts of attempted murder, receiving a ten-year sentence in 2013.

It remains unclear why the convicted felon was permitted to remain in Germany given his serious criminal background, or whether he had obtained German citizenship through naturalization. The incident has renewed questions about public safety protocols and the vetting of foreign nationals with violent criminal histories.

The shooting represents yet another incident of armed violence in Germany, raising concerns about enforcement gaps and the adequacy of monitoring systems for individuals with known histories of violent crime.
