Trump dismisses USS Abraham Lincoln deployment concerns as too short
President Trump dismissed family concerns about USS Abraham Lincoln crew conditions after nine months of deployment, saying the carrier would soon be relieved despite reported mental health incidents.
Donald Trump made the remarks at Joint Base Andrews before departing for an event on Long Island, according to Emily Goodin writing in New York Post. When questioned by reporters about relatives raising concerns over conditions aboard the ship, the president responded that the carrier would soon be replaced with another comparable vessel.
The USS Abraham Lincoln has been stationed in the Arabian Sea since January, prior to combat operations commencing against Iran. Approximately 5,000 sailors and Marines are currently serving on board the carrier as part of the extended deployment.
Mental Health Incidents Reported
Reports from Navy Times and Wall Street Journal have detailed troubling incidents stemming from poor living conditions and insufficient downtime. At least three sailors have either attempted to jump overboard or succeeded in doing so, prompting fellow service members to intervene through physical restraint or rescue operations.
The extended deployment has reportedly imposed a severe mental toll on personnel, with family members seeking direct intervention from military leadership.
Family Members Meet With Navy Leadership
More than 200 family members gathered with acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao in San Diego last week to voice their concerns. However, when reporters noted these worries, Trump flatly stated no, they’re not in reference to the families being concerned about conditions.
The president also rejected suggestions that the Lincoln, originally deployed to the South China Sea in November, had been away from shore for too long. When asked about the length of deployment, Trump responded that it was not nearly long enough.
Relief Vessel En Route
The Navy has dispatched the aircraft carrier USS George Washington to the Middle East to provide relief for the Lincoln. The replacement vessel is expected to reach the Arabian Sea within several days, though the exact timeline remains unclear.
