Trump Branded ‘Grifter-in-Chief’ by Blumenthal
Senator Richard Blumenthal accused President Trump of unprecedented corruption on CNN, comparing the alleged misconduct unfavorably to historical scandals involving Harding, Grant, and Nixon.
When asked whether he was surprised by Republican pushback against a particular fund, Blumenthal indicated he was not, arguing that the situation represented “graft on a scale that is unprecedented in our history.” He referenced past presidential controversies involving Warren Harding, Ulysses Grant, and Richard Nixon, but contended that none matched the current scope and audacity of what he described as misconduct.
The Connecticut senator characterized the fund in question as part of what he called a broader pattern of corruption within the administration. Blumenthal emphasized his concern that resources were being misallocated while average Americans struggled with basic expenses, including elevated gasoline prices that he attributed to what he termed a misguided conflict abroad.
Blumenthal outlined alternative uses for the $1.8 billion in question, proposing that healthcare initiatives and his signature legislation—the Major Richard Starr Act—could better serve combat-injured veterans by providing comprehensive disability and retirement benefits. He argued that the nation faced pressing needs that warranted prioritization over current spending decisions.
The senator concluded his remarks by stating that Americans recognize these priorities and that the president was demonstrating himself to be “the grifter in chief.”
