Trump Asserts Authority Over G7 and Ukraine’s Zelensky
President Trump jokingly declared himself "the boss" at the G7 summit in France while securing support for his Iran peace deal and regional security initiatives.
President Donald Trump made a bold entrance at the Group of Seven summit in Evian, France, declaring to assembled reporters and world leaders with characteristic humor that he is “the boss” of the geopolitical landscape.
According to Breitbart News, Trump also drew laughs when he invited journalists to remain for the closed-door G7 discussions, quipping that it would be acceptable to him. The press corps was nevertheless required to exit when formal negotiations commenced.
The White House appeared satisfied enough with the reception to share video footage across social media platforms. Trump appeared to secure much of what he sought from the gathering, notably a collective statement endorsing his Iran peace agreement.
The G7 statement welcomed the American-brokered arrangement with Iran, crediting Trump’s leadership and describing it as an historic chance to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons while addressing regional threats and ballistic missile activities.
The assembled heads of state committed to supporting the deal and backed Trump’s insistence that Iran will not be permitted to impose restrictions or tolls on the Strait of Hormuz.
The group endorsed a multinational defensive initiative spearheaded by France and the United Kingdom to facilitate resumed maritime traffic through the strategic waterway by protecting merchant vessels and ensuring all mines are cleared.
Nuclear Weapons Ban and Lebanon Ceasefire
The G7 reinforced Trump’s determination that Iran will never acquire nuclear weapons and pledged backing for robust diplomatic efforts following the Memorandum of Understanding with Tehran scheduled for signing on Friday.
Connected to the Iran agreement, the G7 supported an immediate and substantial ceasefire in Lebanon, contingent on the Lebanese government finally achieving the disarmament of Hezbollah and establishing a monopoly on arms—an objective promised repeatedly over four decades but never fulfilled.
When questioned whether Europe had adopted his position on Iran, Trump replied that he believes they recognize he was correct. He noted that all parties now want involvement, though he suggested the matter is essentially resolved, appearing to criticize European reluctance to provide meaningful assistance with reopening the Strait of Hormuz until after his ceasefire agreement with Tehran.
Trump expressed confidence that Iranian officials want to sign the MOU, but issued a stark warning: if they don’t behave, we’ll go right back to dropping bombs on them.
Ukraine Conflict and Russian Relations
The summit also focused extensively on Russia’s war against Ukraine. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney sought to temper Trump’s bold declaration by informing reporters that the American president has accepted the G7’s firm support for Ukraine.
Carney stated there has been a shift in the United States position under Trump, describing it as harder toward Russia and more realistic about the war’s ground situation.
Trump apparently still believes he can broker peace between Russia and Ukraine. When asked if Russian President Vladimir Putin bears primary responsibility for initiating the conflict, he declined to comment, explaining that such statements would complicate settlement efforts.
The American president insisted he maintains good relationships with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who attended the G7 meeting. He expressed hope for ending the conflict, noting he has already ended eight wars and initially thought this would be among the easier ones to resolve, but acknowledged that the two sides harbor deep animosity.
This assessment appeared somewhat inconsistent with a remark from French President Emmanuel Macron, who was caught on a hot microphone telling Zelensky that the G7 had a difficult discussion with Trump.
Trump sounded considerably less enthusiastic about Ukraine when speaking with reporters on Tuesday, stating that America has nothing to do with the conflict beyond weapons sales and noting the distance of thousands of miles.
The joint summit statement nevertheless expressed unwavering support for Ukraine in defending its freedom, sovereignty and territorial integrity, praised Ukrainian resilience, and pledged additional military assistance for Kyiv.
The leaders committed to increasing pressure on the Russian war economy through strengthened sanctions, including those targeting oil and gas sectors.
