Tense Scene in Dead Zone: Provocation by Occupying Forces with Turkish Flag (Video)
Recent military moves in Cyprus’ Dead Zone, including Turkey’s flag raised on site, signal attempts to alter the status quo, prompting UN and UK forces to heighten vigilance amid tensions.
The recent attempt to breach the status quo has revealed the strong presence of the occupying forces in the Dead Zone. With the installation of a military tent and the hoisting of the Turkish flag in the area, the authorities appear to be seeking the acceptance of new faits accomplis in the Republic of Cyprus. Although the day passed without incidents, this activity mobilized UNFICYP and the police forces of the British Dhekelia bases.
“No tanks entered the Dead Zone,” stated Alim Sidik, UNFICYP spokesperson, emphasizing the calmness of the situation.
As he noted, no clashes with UN peacekeepers were recorded within the Dead Zone, refuting rumors that circulated. UNFICYP is in continuous communication with the involved parties to de-escalate tensions.
The recent developments reveal the desire of the occupying forces to impose new faits accomplis in the area. The spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General pointed out that UNFICYP has increased its presence due to the “unauthorized entry of Turkish Cypriot security personnel” into the neutral zone, highlighting that any violation of the regime constitutes a serious threat to stability.
In contrast, Letympiotis denounced this behavior as an attempt to create new faits accomplis.
In the northern sector of Plati, the situation is tense, with the occupying forces acting in violation of international law and the existing agreement on the Dead Zone. Some representatives of the Turkish Cypriots attributed the events to misleading reports from Greek media, reiterating their position that their side does not seek escalation.
The leader of the Turkish Cypriots, Tufan Erhürman, stated that the Turkish Cypriot side does not intend to engage in the tension, committing to managing the situation of foot-and-mouth disease. The pseudoprime minister, Ünal Üstel, emphasized efforts to prevent Greek Cypriots from entering the area, using foot-and-mouth disease as a cover for their strategic moves.
