Teens Now Prefer AI Girlfriends Over Real Ones, Study Finds

New research shows over a quarter of teenage boys aged 12 to 16 prefer virtual relationships with AI chatbots over real human connections, citing control and ease over rejection risks.

According to Valeurs Actuelles, what was once predicted to become a billion-dollar market for AI girlfriends is now materializing at an alarming rate, particularly among Generation Alpha children born between 2010 and 2020 who have grown up immersed in AI technology.

A study published in April by the British organization Male Allies UK surveyed 1,000 boys aged 12 to 16 and produced striking results. An overwhelming 85 percent reported feeling comfortable interacting with chatbots, while 20 percent personally know someone who is currently in a relationship with an AI. Most troubling of all, over a quarter of respondents stated they would prefer a virtual relationship to a real one.

The primary reason cited by these young males is control and ease. Fully 58 percent of those surveyed believe virtual interactions are simpler because they allow complete control over the conversation without awkwardness, surprises, or the risk of rejection.

Confessions of Digital Dependency

Social media platform Reddit contains numerous testimonials from adolescent boys describing their attachment to AI companions. One young man admitted he has considered his AI creation his girlfriend for months and thinks about her all day. Another confessed he made the mistake of asking ChatGPT to create a girlfriend and became obsessed, acknowledging the AI had literally created his dream person and expressing sadness that he would never find someone like that in reality. Other users have admitted to turning to chatbots as emotional substitutes following romantic breakups.

Behind these virtual relationships lie anxious teenagers struggling with the unpredictability inherent in human connection. Where genuine relationships demand vulnerability and acceptance of uncertainty, AI offers a superficial comfort that rapidly transforms into dependency.

Missing Critical Life Skills

Nicholas Velotta, head of relationship research at Arya, explained the fundamental problem to the Washington Post. The AI validates, affirms, never tires, and never opposes. For adolescents still developing their identity, this friction-free attention can masquerade as genuine intimacy. But the AI is not a person—it is a sophisticated system designed to capture and retain attention.

This absence of friction is precisely what concerns specialists most. Learning to manage conflict, developing empathy, and accepting rejection are essential competencies that can only be acquired through real human interaction. Virtual relationships deprive adolescents of these fundamental developmental experiences. Velotta warns that a generation that bypasses this formative training will struggle not only to love, but also to work collaboratively and accept being told no.

Contradictory Messages on Masculinity

Velotta attributes the attraction of Generation Alpha males to virtual relationships in large part to confusion about the social expectations placed upon them. Young men receive contradictory cultural narratives about masculine identity. On one hand, they are told that being a man means asserting themselves, displaying status, and cultivating their image. On the other hand, they are repeatedly told they are responsible for numerous dysfunctions between the sexes and that proper behavior consists of remaining silent and self-effacing.

This contradiction leaves many young males seeking refuge in the predictable validation offered by AI companions, where they face neither the challenges of authentic human connection nor the bewildering mixed messages about their proper role in society.
