Teen Swordsman Kills One in Swedish School Attack
An 18-year-old suspect has been arrested following a sword attack at a Swedish high school that killed one person and seriously injured two boys aged 12 to 17.
The assault unfolded Friday at the Brinell School in central Sweden, approximately northwest of Stockholm, while classes were in session with an estimated 400 to 500 students present, according to New York Post.
Police Chief Tommy Alriksson confirmed during a press conference that the armed suspect had been taken into custody after officers fired shots during the arrest operation. Officials have not disclosed whether the attacker sustained injuries, but stated he is being held in detention rather than receiving hospital treatment.
Two Seriously Injured, Motive Unknown
Authorities in Vastmanland County confirmed that the two seriously wounded victims are boys aged between 12 and 17 years old. Details regarding the deceased victim have not been released, and no information about the attacker’s possible motive has emerged.
Police Chief Alriksson emphasized that investigators have found no evidence suggesting multiple perpetrators were involved in the attack. Swedish national police have already conducted two house searches connected to the suspect, with numerous witness interviews expected as the investigation proceeds.
The police chief explained that investigators are limiting public disclosures to avoid influencing potential witness testimony during the ongoing inquiry.
Emergency Response and Lockdowns
Police spokesperson Pelle Vamstad said emergency services received an alarm in the early afternoon on Friday. Law enforcement cordoned off an extensive perimeter around the school and established roadblocks throughout the area. Multiple nearby schools were placed under lockdown as a precautionary measure.
The Fagersta municipal government quickly established a crisis center in a sports hall adjacent to the school to provide support services. The county government reported that many individuals were affected by the incident, with police, fire services, and healthcare workers deployed to assist victims and witnesses.
Prime Minister Responds
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson addressed the attack via social media, expressing dismay at the violence occurring immediately after the summer break concluded. He stated that while the motivation behind the act remains unclear, police are working intensively on the case, adding that his thoughts are with all those affected by the tragedy.
