Teen Rape Victim Slams Judge After Attackers Avoid Jail
Two British teenage rapists received non-custodial sentences prompting a government review after a judge said he did not want to "criminalise" the young offenders despite multiple rape convictions.
Two 15-year-old boys avoided prison last week despite being convicted of multiple rapes, prompting one victim to publicly question the value of enduring a traumatic court process only to see her attackers walk free, according to Breitbart News.
The unnamed victim, who was 15 at the time of the November 2024 attack, told the BBC that reporting the assault to police and reliving the ordeal in court had been deeply traumatising. The two convicted youths were also found guilty of a second gang rape of a teenage girl at playing fields in the same town in January 2025. During sentencing, Judge Nicholas Rowland praised the attackers for their courtroom behaviour.
The assaults were recorded on smartphones, with footage showing the attackers laughing and encouraging one another. That footage was subsequently shared online.
The first victim, attacked in an underpass in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, near the River Avon in 2024, described her reaction to the sentencing. She questioned why she had subjected herself to the pain of a trial, reliving the attack through evidence and video testimony, only to see what she described as a meaningless outcome. The sentence felt, she said, like a “rock straight in my face”.
Judge defends lenient sentencing approach
At sentencing, Judge Rowland explained his rationale for avoiding incarceration. I have to remember that you are not small adults, he stated, adding that he sought to avoid unnecessarily criminalising children and to support their reintegration into society.
One of the attackers, now 15, was convicted of raping two girls and two counts of taking indecent images. He received a three-year Youth Rehabilitation Order with 180 days of intensive supervision. A YRO is a community sentence for children with a maximum duration of three years, which can include mental health treatment, curfews, drug testing, and unpaid work requirements.
The second attacker, also 15, was found guilty of three rape charges and four counts of taking indecent images. He received an identical sentence. A third teenager, now 14, who was present at the second attack, was convicted of aiding and abetting and handed an 18-month YRO.
The court was told that one rapist scored in the bottom one per cent on IQ tests, while another had a mild cognitive impairment. None of the victims or attackers have been publicly identified due to their ages.
Mother appeals directly to Prime Minister
The mother of the first victim addressed Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer directly in an emotional appeal, as Breitbart News reports. She asked whether he would be satisfied with such a “slap on the wrist” if the victim were his own daughter, niece, or family member. She urged him to use his authority to intervene, stating that neither she nor the public would accept such lenient treatment of violent criminals.
The sentencing drew widespread condemnation across the political spectrum, including from the government and the Prime Minister himself, who described the case as appalling. Officials confirmed the government is urgently reviewing the case and may refer the sentences to the Court of Appeal under its legal powers.
