About
Vox was founded in 2013 by former Partido Popular members led by Santiago Abascal. The party advocates Spanish national unity, fierce opposition to Catalan and Basque separatism, strict immigration controls, and traditional social values. It achieved a major breakthrough in 2019, becoming the first Spanish far-right party to win parliamentary seats since the transition to democracy. After the 2024 EU elections Vox joined the Patriots for Europe group in the European Parliament.
Wikipedia ↗Leadership
Santiago Abascal has led Vox since its founding in 2013. Born in 1975 in Bilbao to a Basque family that suffered ETA terrorist violence, his personal biography is central to his political identity: he frames Spanish unity as a deeply personal cause. Forceful in delivery and unapologetically nationalist, he has made Vox Spain's most prominent voice of the patriotic right.
