Smer
About
Smer – Slovak Social Democracy was founded by Robert Fico in 2000 originally as a social-democratic party. Over time it evolved into a nationalist-populist force combining leftist economic rhetoric with sovereignist foreign policy. Since returning to power after the 2023 Slovak elections, Smer has shifted Slovakia toward a pro-Russian position on the Ukraine war, opposed military aid to Ukraine, and clashed with EU partners over foreign policy.
Wikipedia ↗Leadership
Robert Fico has dominated Slovak politics since the mid-2000s, having served as Prime Minister from 2006–2010 and 2012–2018 before returning to office in 2023. In May 2024 he survived an assassination attempt that left him severely wounded. He has remained in office since and continues to pursue an independent foreign policy at odds with the EU mainstream on the Ukraine conflict.
