Lucas Gustavo Dibenedetto was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers this week following charges of drunk driving, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and driving the wrong way, according to Breitbart News.

Massachusetts State Police report that on May 31, Dibenedetto allegedly drove intoxicated in the wrong direction down Route 1 before colliding with a state trooper’s vehicle. The injured trooper required hospitalization but has since been discharged and is recuperating at home.

Despite facing serious criminal charges, Massachusetts officials released Dibenedetto from custody due to the state’s sanctuary jurisdiction policies. Federal immigration authorities intervened and arrested him on June 2.

Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Lauren Bis issued a sharp rebuke of the state’s decision to release the illegal alien without coordinating with federal law enforcement.

Following his arrest, sanctuary politicians in Massachusetts released this dangerous criminal from jail without notifying ICE, Bis stated, adding that the suspect is now in ICE custody and will face removal from the country.

Bis called on sanctuary jurisdiction politicians to stop endangering American lives and begin cooperating with federal immigration enforcement efforts.

Immigration records show Dibenedetto entered the United States on January 5, 2007, with authorization to remain for only three months. He overstayed his visa and remained in the country illegally for more than 18 years.

The case highlights ongoing tensions between federal immigration enforcement and sanctuary policies that prohibit local law enforcement from cooperating with ICE detainer requests.
